You can write an introduction for IELTS writing task 2 using the 3-step strategy:

Step no 1: Neutral background sentence

Step no 2: Rewrite the statement

Step no 3: The outline statement

 

Step 1: Neutral background sentence

In the first step, you need to state a background sentence about the topic. It’s a general statement regarding the topic, it's broad. Neutral mean it does not have an opinion of your position or opinion on the topic. This will make it clear to the examiner what your essay will be arguing. 

For example, if the question statement is about online education advantages vs in-person classes, a background sentence will be like ''The trend of online education is increasing in developed countries while some students still prefer in-person mode of education''


Step 2: Paraphrase the task prompt

The first step of the 2nd step is to paraphrase the task prompt in your own words. This shows the examiner that you have understood the task and can express it in your own language. 

For example, if the task prompt is "Some people think that the government should provide free education. Do you agree or disagree?", you could paraphrase it as "There are those who believe that the government should fund education without charge. What is your view on this issue?

The thesis statement is also an integral part of the 2nd step. In the thesis sentence, you give your opinion regarding the topic. It is basically a one-sentence statement regarding how you feel about the topic


Step 3: Outline your main points

In the final step, you need to briefly outline the main points that you will be discussing in your essay. This gives the reader an idea of what to expect in the body paragraphs. For example, "In this essay, I will discuss the benefits of free education for individuals and society, as well as potential drawbacks such as the cost to taxpayers."


Final Example:

Putting it all together, a complete introduction for the task prompt "Some people think that the government should provide free education. Do you agree or disagree?" using the 3-step strategy would be:

Education is one of the most integral yet expensive elements in the development of a country. There are those who believe that the government should fund education without charge. In my opinion, the government should provide free education to its citizens. In this essay, I will discuss the benefits of free education for individuals and society, as well as potential drawbacks such as the cost to taxpayers.
